Fly fishing for steelhead on the Clearwater River, Idaho -- Shaking hands with the Planet

A good mend to the leader sets my line up for a perfect swing through a section of water where I saw some ‘finning’ on my last cast. “I may have a player,” I say to myself. A slight ’S’ starts to form in the line as it continues to swing the fly through anticipating waters. Then a stop, the line straightens as I lift the rod tip slightly to test for fish or snag. Not a snag! I feel the fish turn and dive just before I experience the explosive power of the Steelhead. A rhythmic, pulsing tug pulls line off of the reel for three distinct beats followed by a long violent run as line peels off the singing reel. I start to cup the reel with my left hand to provide a little more drag, “Don’t horse it, let it run,” I’m telling myself. Instantly the line knifes through of the water tightening to a direct connect to the rising fish. An explosion of water, an uncontrolled “Ya Hoo!” and the quiet stillness of the Clearwater comes alive with man and fish. “How do You do?” races through my mind as I shake hands with the planet. The fight is on, the outcome is uncertain. “The Tug is the Drug” is a common slogan on the Clearwater: I’m hooked.

Nothing seems to connect the outdoorsman more than experiencing hand to hand combat with the forces of nature. Life changing, character building events occur when engaged with the uncertainty of the out of doors.

Come to the Clearwater, shake hands with the planet and experience the forces of nature. The “Freedom” Boat Owned by Clearwater River Co. LLC, Designed For the Disabled.

Guided Drift Boat Trips

If you have enjoyed fishing but thought your time on the river was over because of mobility issues, maybe you should reconsider! Clearwater River Co. LLC has a boat which is disabled accessible. This boat is equipped with a transom that folds down and becomes a walking or wheelchair ramp. The seats are removable if needed, allowing the wheelchair to roll into the bow of the boat. Once the wheelchair is in place there is a tie down system for the chair to be securely anchored. If it is a matter of a walker, the client can walk up the transom to the front of the boat and then sit in a seat. There is a heater in the bow of the boat to help protect from the cold. So, if you want to get out on the water again, give us a call and make a reservation on our boat named FREEDOM and enjoy your time on the Clearwater River with us.

CLEARWATER RIVER STEELHEAD FISHING LEGEND 'ROGER MONGER'

Idaho Steelhead Fishing

Roger with boar Steelhead.

Photo credits to Ken Hyde of Boise Idaho.

Many people may consider the term “Legend” a strong word, however anyone who ever had the privilege of fishing with Roger Monger would agree, Roger was a Legend!

It was in 1991 when I took my 70 year old mother Steelhead fishing on the Clearwater River. On average unguided bank anglers will spend more than ten hours for each Steelhead caught. The only hope we had to increase our odds of catching fish was to hire a good fishing guide. We scheduled two days with Roger Monger. The 21st of October was my mom’s 70th birthday so of course we scheduled ‘her day’ as the first of two days with Roger. Being a Texas girl mom wasn’t sure  about the ‘catch and release’ aspect of not keeping wild steelhead. “In Texas you keep and eat what you catch.” she reminded me.

We put in at The Pink House and took out at Peck. Ice covered the shoreline rocks and getting my mom into the boat took extra care. Back then we celebrated every fish caught with a quick pull off a bottle of Irish Mist. We   brought 10 fish to the boat that first day with my mom hooking-up 8 of them. She needed more help getting out of the boat than she did getting in. A glorious birthday was provided by Roger’s expert talents as a fishing guide. The next day we floated from Lenore to Cherry Lane, hooked 8 and brought 6 fish to the boat. Mom was hooked on Steelhead fishing and went every year till she passed in 1997. She once told me, “Some people catch fish and some fish catch people, the Steelhead is the latter.” Those days on the river with Roger Monger and my mom are some of my fondest memories.

I met Roger in 1984 on my first trip to the Clearwater and always scheduled time in the boat with him. Over the years he taught me how to row a drift boat, read the river and where the fish lie. The value of a good guide cannot be over estimated. A well seasoned guide can put the fisherman into fish even in years with low return numbers. The numbers of returning fish do not determine the quality of fishing, the guide does. Roger passed in 2011 at the age of 72 but he still lives in every nook and cranny of the Clearwater. Those who knew him were struck by his quiet demeanor and his immense knowledge of the Clearwater and the Steelhead between its banks. He is truly a legend and he is with me every time I’m on the Clearwater.

New Steelhead and Chinook Salmon Fishing Regulations

Salmon caught on the Clearwater River

Another Steelhead season is fast approaching and we are excited to hook into some of our Giant Clearwater River Steelhead. These B-runs are the largest steelhead that swim into Idaho’s waterways. If you are looking for a fishing trip in Idaho, we have the guides to put you on the fish.

It is no secret that the runs are down again this year. For that reason the Idaho Fish and Game have modified the retention season. It is still a little early to tell how what our numbers will be because traditionally Clearwater B run Steelhead do not start to cross over Bonneville dam until August 25th. So now is the time to start watching. Don’t let the new rule changes deter you from enjoying this great opportunity. A few years ago when the retention regulations were changed, we had AMAZING fishing and catching experiences for our clients.

There has definitely been some mixed emotions about the Chinook Salmon season on the Clearwater. Historically, we have not had a fall salmon fishery. At this point there is an IDF&G proposal, pending permit approval by the National Marine Fisheries Service, for a Fall Chinook retention season. So why the mixed emotions….. Well if the permit is approved, anglers who prefer to swing for steelhead will have higher traffic on the river Thursdays - Sunday. I personally love to Spey fish for steelhead, so I will be recommending that our fly fishing clients book trips Monday - Wednesday. That doesn’t mean that you can’t fly-fish the other days of the week, but be ready for more boats on the water. On the other hand, this is great news for gear anglers who want to tie into a Fall Chinook.

Stay tuned for more information on the Clearwater River, Idaho! For detailed information visit the IDF&G website.
